INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

Posted by: Dan

I've met quite a few impressive women in my time, but inspirational? Miss Chen [Jingzu] was not a nice person really, but in 1984-5 at Ealing College, London she managed to ensure the whole class learned to read, write & speak Putonghua [Mandarin to the great unwashed]
I was always ok, because I did my homework and my 9 years in Hong Kong learning and speaking Cantonese dialect was a great asset.
MOst of my classmates hated Mondays, because she always gave us a lot of stuff to prepare over the weekend. If you turned up to the 3 hour Monday without preparation, she made you eat the hot potato as her Number 2, Mr. Tang, called it. She would in her best Sichuan tones shout !Nonsense! You are an idiot! Next!
I was seen by some of the younger English male graduates as an elder statesman. Miss Chen on a Monday left them shocked, battered and bewildered. They came to me complaining of Miss Chen's rudeness and abuse and looking for sympathy, I asked them if they had done their homework and prepared the passage for Monday they made feeble excuses. I asked them if they wished to be awarded their diplomas or not and if they thought Miss Chen wanted them all to pass.
They answered 'Yes' to both.
I said, 'Well start doing some bloody work.' Miss Chen helped me a lot for years after the course with my translations. She never asked for a penny. Have a great day Chen Laoshi. i wish the same to all the women who have been helpful and kind to me. Much appreciated.
